ABEOKUTA—Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has acknowledged the role the former governor of Ogun State, Chief Segun Osoba played in the actualisation of the Presidential Library project commissioned at the weekend.
Obasanjo while addressing the international audience during the grand opening of the Library built in Abeokuta, said he did not envisage that Chief Osoba would attend the event, urging the people to join him appreciating the former governor for providing the complex 32 hectares of land.
Osoba, who stood up for recognition following the request by Obasanjo received a standing ovation from the gathering which included Presidents of about 10 countries, former Presidents and heads of governments. Osoba then took a bow to appreciate the applause.
Chief Osoba had donated the large expanse of land to Obasanjo for the project when he was the governor of the state.
While acknowledging the kind gesture of Osoba , Obasanjo said, he gave him generous concession for the land on which the multi-million Naira project was sited.
Obasanjo said; “ I was not sure Chief Osoba would be here, what I just said is what I wrote in my speech, but I can confirm that Chief Osoba is physically present.
“The event that happened today happened because Chief Osoba gave me generous concession on the land,” Obasanjo said as his statement was greeted with thunderous applause.
When asked, Chief Osoba who had stopped attending Obasanjo’s functions for long , said he was at the event because the former President personally invited him to the occasion.
He also confirmed that he gave Chief Obasanjo heavy concession for the land, saying, the former President only paid for application form.
Vanguard gathered that, the former President in his invitation to the former governor sent a letter dated February 3, 2017 titled: Appreciation and invitation to the grand opening of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library on Saturday, March 4, 2017.
Obasanjo letter a copy of which was obtained by Vanguard read in part: “Some fifteen years ago, you kindly allocated the land to the OOPL foundation that signalled the commencement of the project. it was followed by the launch in 2005.”
