Obiano lauds doctors, promises to restructure health sector in Anambra

THE Executive Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, has applauded the National Medical Association (NMA), Awka zone, for its tremendous efforts in ensuring the health and well being of Ndi Anambra are well taken care of and promised to restructure the health sector in the state.

Chief Obiano at the 2018 Physicians’ Week opening ceremony held yesterday, at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital Amaku Hall in Awka, the Anambra State capital, expressed his gratitude to doctors in the state especially the role they played and are still playing to the flood victims in the state.

The Governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Health Hon Joseph Akabuike, urged them on the need to also take good care of themselves so that they will be healthy to be able to also take care of their patients also.

He frowned at the existence of quack doctors in the state assuring the association that impersonators will soon be brought to book.

According to him, We are making efforts to restructure the health sector through ensuring that the lives of our people are protected.

“There are basic minimum standards every hospital must meet and who ever that does not meet up to the standard, will have its hospital shut down.

“Our goal is to sanitise the health sector and that is why we have resumed re-certification.”

“We will continue to make efforts in putting the health sector to its rightful place that is why we have put in place the Health Insurance Scheme.

“Over a hundred primary health care centers have been renovated and we have five hundred and sixty five (565) in the state and we want to make sure all of them are functional.

State Chairman NMA, Dr Emmanuel Muonago in his address emphasised on the need for doctors to be celebrated.

“This is a week dedicated to doctors in service. This is a week to recognize the effort of doctors, who deserve some credit, because most times we discharge our work even at the detriment of our own health.

“NMA has always been in the forefront in extending medical services and charity work and we are always ready to do more.

The Chairman regretted the fact that NMA who is as old as the State is still not having a Secretariat. He however appealed to the government to come to their assistance.

Chairman NMA Awka zone, Dr Izuchukwu Okeke earlier in his address assured the state government of partnership in delivering quality and affordable healthcare to the citizens and residents of the state.

Speaking on the theme of this year Physicians Week, “Universal health coverage – leaving no one behind,” tasked its members to always be there for each other through participating, advising and giving suggestions that will move the association forward.
