Ogun State government has warned residents to avoid erecting structures in disaster-prone areas, urging them to always get building approvals before embarking on such.
Governor Ibikunle Amosun gave the warning during the distribution of Certificates of Occupancy (C of O) and building plan approvals beneficiaries, at the Arcade Ground, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Represented by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Bolaji Oyeleye, Amosun said people should desist from building in places not approved by government, such as waterways, under high-tension cables and oil pipeline areas.
‘’Those that are building or yet to build should obtain approvals in order to avoid disasters, such as the recent flash flood that happened in Abeokuta. Please, don’t erect building on waterways, under high-tension cables, oil pipelines and other disaster prone areas,” he said.
Earlier in his remark, the Special Adviser and Director-General, Bureau of Lands and Survey, Mr. Biyi Ismail, noted that the presentation of C of O has been consistent, adding that efforts to increase the distribution from 1,000 to 2,000 was in motion.
