More than 3,000 volunteers who indicated interest in taking part at the 21st African Senior Athletics Championships have undergone the preparatory screening for the event.
The event is scheduled for Asaba from August 1 to 5.
The security chief for the event Navy Commodore Omatseye Nesiama (retd.) announced that over 3000 individuals were present on Monday, when the preparatory stage of the screening exercise started.
He said background and security checks were being carried out on the intending volunteers as his committee was out to select capable hands that would further help in the planned world-class August event.
“The screening for the volunteers commenced on Monday, over 3,000 (volunteers) are being screened and the makeup is all-encompassing across the state, across the country and it includes some civil servants,” Nesiama said in a statement issued by Olukayode Thomas, Head Media and Publicity of the event.
“Yes, we are prepared for the large turnout, but I was a bit surprised also because people are ready and willing to do true volunteering in the real sense of it.The people who have indicated interest are genuinely ready to work not for any personal gain but to contribute their quota to this historic event,” Neisiama added.
The 21st African Senior Athletics Championship will be held at the newly-built Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.
