Nigeria’s opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called for an emergency convergence of its National Executive Committee to discuss the venue for its national convention.

The emergency meeting which is scheduled to hold in Abuja is coming after some of the party members kicked against the venue initially picked for the convention and other vices going on in the party.

The party opted for Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, ahead of other places for its national convention because it meets all the requirements needed to host over 4,000 delegates

Some members of the party have however protested against the choice of venue claiming the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, is supporting one of the presidential aspirants. Although, Wike said, during a consultative visit by Gombe State governor Ibrahim Dankwambo, who is a PDP Presidential aspirant, that the Rivers delegate will have to meet to decide on who to support.

Wike had initially justified the selection of the Port Harcourt as congress venue, stating that it has all the hotels and sundry facilities and had enjoyed a flawless hosting of such event in the past.

But some of the party members and presidential aspirants think otherwise, claiming the Port Harcourt venue was skewed to confer an undue advantage to a particular aspirant.

They further alleged the party’s Board of Trustees of going against the party rules by rooting for one of the 13 presidential aspirants.

The presidential aspirant is also believed to have influenced the board which is also referred to as the conscience of the party.

Wike, however, has threatened that the state will teach the party a lesson if they moved the venue of the PDP National Convention away from Port Harcout, Rivers State.

“Let me warn the party, if they dare, Rivers State will teach the party a lesson. Those days have passed when they took Rivers State for granted. Nobody can use and dump Rivers State.”
