Police foil bank robbery in Aba

ABA – The Police in Aba, Abia State, has foiled an attempt by a gang of hoodlums to rob an Automated Teller Machine, ATM, at Diamond Bank in the city.

Sunday Vanguard gathered that the robbers had at about 8.15pm, fired several shots in a bid to rip open the ATM, located at the Asa Road branch of the bank, but couldn’t succeed.

On sighting Policemen who were alerted about the incident, the robbers fired some more shots and abandoned a BMW X5 SUV with Registration number, KUJ 657 EL.

When contacted, Abia State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Leye Oyebade, who confirmed the incident, told Sunday Vanguard that the BMW vehicle was earlier snatched from its owner along George’s Street, Aba.

Oyebade stated that the Police in the state had the capacity to respond to distress calls within 3 minutes in any area, adding that investigations had commenced on the incident and appealed to residents to report suspected movements to the Police. In a related development, a notorious kidnapper who has been terrorizing residents of Aba has been nabbed by the Police.

Police sources stated that the suspect, Tochukwu Ugwunsi, aka ‘Cobra no dey
sleep’, who has been on the wanted list of the Command, was arrested during a robbery operation in the city while two of the gang members identified as Chidera and Emeka, escaped on sighting the Police.
