Tony John, Port Harcourt

The organised labour has advised people living in Rivers State to prepare for the nationwide strike.

On Tuesday,  members of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC)  and the United Labour Congress (ULC), marched along major roads in Port Harcourt,  defying rainfall in some parts of the state capital.

This demonstration came less than a week to the November 6 nationwide strike by organised labour to push forward for demand for a unified  minimum wage.

State leader of the NLC, Beatrice Itubo,  in her speech during the peaceful protest, advised Nigerian workers to be prepared for the strike,  which is in their interest.

Itubo, in her address, said Nigerians should not see the protest as a sudden incident because ample notice has been given to members of the public preparatory for the march.

She stated that the nationwide strike would shut down all sectors and paralyse business activities.

Some of the protesters told journalists that it was inhuman on the side of government and politicians to kick against the N30,000 demand for minimum wage by labour.

They accused politicians of being selfish, only interested in their own affairs, while civil servants suffer and not remembered.

Meanwhile,  some Rivers State residents have appealed to Federal Government to engage the organised labour in a dialogue, to avoid increasing the current hardship in the country.
