AHEAD of the primary elections of the All Progressives Congress (APC), into various positions and having failed in the bid to upturn the adoption of indirect voting system by the stakeholders of the party, some governorship and senatorial aspirants under the party in Bauchi State have raised an alarm that some elements within the party have embarked on moves aimed at doctoring the authentic list of delegates for the primaries.
According to a press release signed by two of the governorship aspirants, Dr Yakubu Lame and Captain Muhammad Bala Jibrin as well as two senatorial hopefuls, Senator Mohammed A. Mohammed and Barrister Ibrahim Zailani which were issued to Journalists in Bauchi, such elements allegedly embarked on removing and replacing the authentic list of delegates recognized by the National headquarters of the party whom they suspect ‘will not do their bidding’.
They alleged that, “We, the undersigned aspirants of various political positions under the auspices of our great party, the All Progressives Congress wish to bring to the attention of the people of Bauchi state and members of the APC that a reliable source has revealed to us that some unscrupulous elements within the party have embarked on doctoring the authentic list of delegates with a view to removing and replacing those they perceive will not do their bidding.”
“We also view this as a manifestation of desperation by persons who have apparently been rejected by the people of the state, to impose their will,” they further alleged.
The aspirants who decried that the move was dangerous to democracy said it also had the potentials of derailing the much achieved democratic dispensation.
“We, therefore, call on the people of the state and especially members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to be vigilant as any attempt to tinker with the list of the approved delegates will have grave consequences on the polity as well as the peace of the State”, they stated.
The aspirants further stated that “we urge those unpatriotic elements to stop forthwith their dubiousness, otherwise we shall be compelled to ask the authentic delegates to ensure that they participate in all primaries as the duly recognized delegates by the National Headquarters of the party which has the authentic list in its custody.”
But in a Swift reaction to the allegations raised by the aspirants, the State APC Chairman, Alhaji Uba Ahmed Nana described the accusations as baseless saying that the party has no favourite candidates.
Uba Nana assured that the guidelines of the party set for the conduct of the primaries will be adhered to strictly adding that the party will go by the decision of the stakeholders to use the indirect primaries system for all elective offices in the party.
