The Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State have asked security agencies to probe the claims by the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Prof. Abdul-Ganiy Raji, that some individuals threatened to kill him.
The REC had, at a stakeholders’ forum on Thursday in Ado Ekiti, said he had been receiving strange calls from some people who threatened to kill him if he failed to succumb to their bidding.
The REC had said, “Most of these threats were from elders alleging that we were one-sided but they have forgotten that there are two sides to a coin. If you don’t want INEC to do some things, you must also be cautious.”
Reacting to the development on Saturday, the state Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Jackson Adebayo, and his counterpart in the APC, Taiwo Olatunbosun, in separate interviews, demanded an investigation into the REC’s claims.
They also urged the security agencies in the state to ensure his safety.
Olatunbosun said, “The Ekiti are peace-loving people and won’t do anything to circumvent a peaceful process. It is our advice that the people planning any evil action should take caution. We, in the APC, are law-abiding and we are committed to the ideals of democracy.”
Adebayo also said, “We (PDP) are on the ground and we know we are the party to beat. So, desperate politicians from a desperate political party will want to scuttle a process if it would not favour them.
“We call on security agencies to dig deep into the allegation and unravel those behind the threat.”
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Adebisi Olufemi, declined to speak on the matter.
