Rep to probe black marketing of mint naira notes

THE House of Representatives on Wednesday resolved to investigate the black- Marketing of Mint Naira notes on the streets and motor Parks while it was perpetually unavailable in the nation’s commercial banks.

The House also urged the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to commence the immediate withdrawal of mutilated naira notes from the circulation and replace ‎them with new notes especially the N100 currency Note.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion moved by Hon Adekoya Adesegun Abdel -Majid, titled, “Need to investigate the sales of Mint currency Notes and sources of Black-Marketing of the naira’, at the plenary yesterday.

While leading the debate, the lawmaker noted that the Naira was greatly losing its value in the international market and we’ll be facing a serious war within the country as it was being handled with no respect by citizens.

According to him, “Naira now appears in inglorious forms and with odours that can be dangerous to human health

” The naira notes in circulation are badly torn, terribly squeezed, soiled, cello taped, dirty and mutilated, especially the N100 notes which carries the face of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo

“Except for the 1000 and 500 naira notes, other notes are rarely to customers in the banks and are available at the black markets ‘

The lawmaker lamented that it has reached an alarming situation where‎ mint naira notes were being hawked at open places such Deidre in Abuja, Iwo Road motor park, Ibadan, Ojota Motor park Lagos and other parts of the Country along with such items like bread, pure water, Cold minerals, newspapers among others.

Hon Adekoya who pleaded that there was the urgent need to halt the trend in order to save the image of the country before the International Community pleaded with House the mandate the Committee and Currency to investigate the black -marketing and hawking of naira notes on the Streets while the House Committees on Legislative Compliance and Banking and Currency to ensure Strict compliance.

When the motion was put into voice vote by the Speaker, Hon Yakubu Dogara who presided the plenary, it was unanimously Supported.
