ilorin—THE National and state houses of assembly in Nigeria have been urged to enact a stringent law against gender-based violence in the country.

The call was made by the founder of SAAB Foundation, Miss Saadat Bibiire, at the 2nd edition of the group’s campaign walk against rape and gender-based violence in Ilorin, at the weekend.

Saadat, who said the campaign was motivated by the need to get the public to kick against the menace of rape and gender-based intimidation, said unless laws against rape are strict the menace will continue in our society.

She said: “It is a tragedy in Nigeria that up till today, there are still reported cases of violence against females, and I strongly believe that this trend is being encouraged because there are no laws to tame it, and there has not been any scapegoat for that matter.

“I therefore call on our legislators in our states and at the National Assembly to give this issue the serious attention it deserves by enacting what I can simply call a maximum sentence to any offender.”
