The Association of Tourist Boat Operators and Water Transporters has decried the spate of indiscriminate dumping of refuse on Lagos waterways, saying that it could cause boat accidents.
The President of the association, Mr. Ganiyu Tarzan, gave this indication, urging Lagos residents to be watchful and expose those involved in the shameful act.
An online maritime journal, Shipping Position, quoted him as saying that refuse could obstruct free movement of boats, adding, “Once there is too much dirt in a particular portion of the water, it hardens the place and when a boat runs into it by mistake, such boat will capsize.”
Ganiyu commended the Lagos State Government for taking measures to ensure the free movement of boats along the waterways, adding that the surface of the waterways across the state was looking neat unlike what it looked like in the past.
He added that there had been no records of boat accidents in the past few months due to the efforts of the state government and the National Inland Waterways Management Authority, which “bought harvester machine worth millions of naira that is being deployed to pick dirt, wrecks and water hyacinth along the waterways.”
