The Students Union Government (SUG) of the College of Education, Akwanga, has called on the Nasarawa State Government to increase the funding for the college.

Mr Shedrack Abeson, the President of the Caretaker Committee of the association, made the call on Wednesday in Akwanga while presenting a memo to the fact-finding committee investigating activities of the college.

Abeson said such an increase would enable the management to provide more facilities to improve the standard of education in the institution.

He urged government to employ more staff in the college to ensure proper student-lecturer ratio and effective teaching and learning in the college.

“More resources are needed to facilitate the procurement of teaching and learning materials and ensure staff training and development to boost the human capacity.

“Despite efforts to provide adequate accommodation and facilities within the school premises by the management, a large number of students still have no hostel accommodation.

“The existing ones are congested due to the overwhelming students’ population. Government should also do more to provide scholarships and bursaries to students to assist them,” he said.

He commended the management of the college under the headship of Dr Rebecca Isaac for executing projects and programmes that have direct impacts on the lives of the students and lecturers.

“The school management should initiate the process of conducting students’ union election to pave way for robust participation of students in the decision making process of the college.

Earlier, Alhaji Umar Muhammad Sani, Chairman of the fact finding committee, said that the exercise was not to witch-hunt anybody but to ensure improved standard of education in the institution.

Newsmen recall that on Nov. 2, Gov. Tanko Al-Makura inaugurated the five-man committee to investigate activities of the college from 2014 to October.
