The Commissioner of Police in Benue State, Ene Okon, said the command had arrested 12 suspected armed robbers at various locations in the state.
Okon, who stated this during his maiden press briefing on Monday, added that the command recovered from the robbery suspects, eight locally-fabricated guns with 378 rounds of live ammunition and four cartridges among other exhibits.
The CP said the command discovered that criminals were using unregistered motorcycles to perpetrate criminal acts of kidnapping and armed robbery across the state.
Okon reiterated that the ban on motorcycles after 8 pm was still in force in Benue State.
“The command noticed a situation where most of the motorcycles in the state are unregistered and are being used to commit heinous crimes.
“Evidence abounds that motorcycle riders, popularly known as Okada riders, are the ones involved in the kidnapping and armed robbery in the state.
“The ban on motorcycles beyond 8 pm is still in force and there is going to be a total clampdown on criminals using unregistered motorcycles. I have directed my officers and men to impound such unregistered motorcycles and bring the perpetrators to book,” Okon stated.
