A powerful Edinson Cavani header gave Uruguay a 1-0 half-time lead against Portugal in the World Cup last 16 on Saturday, as the South Americans closed in on a quarter-final meeting with France.

Luis Suarez was the provider in the seventh minute, putting in a pinpoint inswinging cross and Cavani gave Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio no chance.

Cristiano Ronaldo was unable to inspire his teammates to an equaliser and the European champions face an exit unless they can find inspiration in the second half.
