The Minster of Niger Delta Affairs, Pastor Uguru Usani, says his ministry is working on another design to ensure that the much talked about East-West Road in the Niger-Delta is successfully completed.
Usani had in December 2017 expressed reservation about the dual carriage East-West Road stretching from Effurun in Delta State to Calabar in Cross River State, which he said was was designed to fail.
However, at a lecture in Calabar tagged “Pragmatic Leaders Good Governance Symposium- Cross River State yesterday, today and the way forward,” Usani noted that the road originally designed to pass through Oron in Akwa Ibom to Urua-Watt in Calabar-South of Cross River State did not have a transparent project plan.
He alleged that some components of the contract were burdened with fraud.
He said, “Imagine somebody saying they are going to supply sand and you are going to pay with the United States dollars. Is that real in Nigeria?
“So it was outright fraud and that is why I said in the public that the East-West Road was originally designed to fail; otherwise, why will you award a contract of less than 400 kilometres from 2006, over one decade, it is not finished?.
“But we are correcting what is sure must make the project work. It does not matter whether I remain in office to complete it or not; that mentality is why we keep failing.”
The Director-General of Pragmatic Leaders, Elizabeth Usani, said the organisation was a non-governmental agency that was ready to work with all progressives to mobilise Cross Riverians to vote and be voted for.
She said the organisation, comprising youths from the state, believed in democracy of free choices of candidates, free and credible elections.
