Newly appointed speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Sheriff Oborevwori

DELTA State House Assembly has cleared the air for not voting on the local government autonomy when the national assembly sent the bill to various states for consideration.

According to the speaker of the house, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, protests from Nigeria Union of Teachers and other bodies in the state made the house to defer deliberation on the bill in order to have time for enough consultations.

Only 10 states have so far voted on the local government autonomy in the country.

Addressing newsmen in Asaba on Thursday as part of activities marking the third anniversary of the sixth assembly in the state, the speaker said a major feat recorded by the house during the period under review was the successful approval of the 4th alteration of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) passed by 2/3 majority of houses of assembly in the country.

Oborevwori disclosed that a total 75 bills and 36 motions made up of 36 executives and 39 private member bills were received since June 2015, out of which 27 bills have been passed and assented to while five are awaiting assent.

The speaker also disclosed that 10 bills were at the committee of the whole house while 10 were pending at various committee levels with 1 bill withdrawn by leave of the house while one failed at first reading.

Some of the bills assented to include Delta state contributory Health Commission Law, Delta State Security Trust Fund (amendment Law) 2016, Delta State Anti Kidnaping and Hostage Taking Law, Delta State Anti Terrorism and Anti cultism Law, Delta State Hotel Occupancy, Restaurant and Department Stores Consumption Task Law 2017.

Others awaiting assents include Delta state statistic bill 2016, Delta state occupational Safety Bill 2017 and Delta Special Offences Cult Bill 2016 among others.

He urged the people of the state to partner with the house by proposing bills that can enrich legislative work adding that the greatest challenge facing the law makers was pressure on them from the constituents.
