KANO— A crack team of policemen from Zone 1 Command, Kano, yesterday arrested and detained former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, over perceived inciting speech he made recently at a political gathering.
However, another source said the former foreign Affairs Minister, was detailed for questioning after honouring police’s invitation to clear air over accusation of inciting violence and threatening public peace over the July 1, local government polls in the state.
Vanguard learned that he was alleged to have addressed his supporters on April 8, at a rally held at PDP headquarters in Dutse, Jigawa State capital and allegedly urged his supporters to ensure the party won the forthcoming local government election at all cost.
The development prompted Jigawa State Government to lodge a formal petition to the police over the issue.
The Zone 1 Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Sambo Sokoto, confirmed the arrest of Lamido , stating that he was invited to answer question in respect of ”certain utterances”
The Police spokesman who declined further details, but promised to address the press soon as the dispatched team returned.
It was gathered that the Jigawa State government had petitioned the zone 1 headquarters of the Police to investigate the former governor’s utterance, claiming that could undermine the peace of the state in the forthcoming local government election in the state.
It was learned that the police had conducted a search on Lamido’s residence at Sharada and found nothing incriminating before they preceeded to his country home, Bamaina to conduct a similar search.
Another police source revealed that “combined teams of detectives were sent to his Bamaina residence in Birnin Kudu Local Government Area of Jigawa State to search the country home of the former Governor.”
However, it was gathered that the Jigawa state governor Mr Badaru Abubakar directed his Media Adviser, Mallam Bello Zaki to the AIG Zone one office and testify as a witness to the alleged allegation.
The former Governor was grilled for over four hours by the police before they took him into custody.
Speaking on the development, the Force Public Relations Officer, Moshood Jimoh, confirmed to Vanguard that the former governor was still being questioned as at the time of going to press last night and might be charged to court after investigation.
Jimoh said: “It is true that the former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, is still being interrogated by our operatives after honouring our invitation on Sunday. The State Government complained against his directive to his supporters to cause trouble and we had to wade in.
“Based on the petition by the state government, we are looking into the issues raised against him and he might be charged to court if there is enough evidence to prove the allegations against him.”
But the Spokesman for Sule Lamido, Umar Kyari, described the arrest of the former governor as a demonstration of fear by the APC Government in the state that the PDP under Lamido could easily win the councils’ election slated for July 1, 2017.
Kyari said however that the detention of Lamido would not add any electoral value to the APC in Jigawa State as the support base of the former governor was widening by the day because of their strong belief in his people-oriented leadership.
