Femi Makinde, Osogbo

Angry youths in Iwo, Osun State, have set ablaze the Police Area Command in the town over  the alleged killing of an undergraduate, Tunde Nofiu, by a policeman attached to the Special Anti Robbery Squad of the state police command.

Nofiu, who was said to be spending holidays in Ileogbo, the headquarters of the Ayedire Local Government Area of the state, was reportedly shot dead by the trigger-happy cop.

Our correspondent gathered that the student, who was returning Ileogbo from Olupona, was shot dead on Thursday night and the incident led to a protest.

Our correspondent was told that some SARS men were heavily drunk and the driver of their van drove recklessly.

It was learnt that one of the operatives shot into the air to scare away some youths who challenged them. The bullet hit Nofiu and he died on the spot.

Nofiu, according to a source in the town, was a son of a popular politician in Ileogbo.

The name of the school of the deceased could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.  But it was gathered that the youths of the town protested and set ablaze the police station on Friday morning.

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Adewale Akanbi, was said to have cautioned the youths from destroying the police station, but they declined his plea.

The youths reportedly vandalised the Police Area Command located around Adeeke before setting it ablaze. They also reportedly made bonfires at some points in the town.

Efforts to speak to the Oluwo were not successful as the monarch did not answer calls placed across to his telephone by our correspondent.

The Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Mr. Finihan Adeoye, when contacted on the telephone, told our correspondent that he could not give the exact account of what happened.

He said the command was still investigating the case while Nofiu’s corpse had been deposited in a mortuary.
