Nigerians have been advised to avoid politicians who delight in promoting religious intolerance and unnecessary ethnicity as the 2019 general elections draw near.

This was the crux of the message delivered by the Secretary-General, Anglican Communion Worldwide, Archbishop Josiah Idowu -Fearon, at the Ogun State Christmas Carol and Service of Nine Lessons, held on Saturday, in Abeokuta.

The carol had in attendance former Nigeria’s President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo; his wife, Bola; the President, Christian Association of Nigeria, Revd. Supo Ayokunle; traditional rulers; House of Clergy, members of the State Executive Council; the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Suraj Adekunbi; the Chief Judge, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu among others.

Idowu-Fearon therefore urged them to scrutinize their preferred candidates, before casting their votes to those whose utterances and actions are capable of polarising the country on religious and ethnic lines.

The Archbishop said the country is on the verge of sinking and heading towards a crash if politicians who are hell-bent in dividing the entity are voted into power.

He commanded the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, for organising a Christmas Carol with the active participation of Muslims as a demonstration that faithful of both religions are serving a true God.

He urged both the Muslims and the Christians to carefully study the Holy Books, the Bible and Quran for better understanding on why adherents must co-exist in peace and harmony.

The cleric urged Northern governors to emulate the leadership qualities of Amosun for promoting unity among the people of the state.

Amosun in his remarks appreciated the people of the state for their cooperation and support in the last seven years of his administration.

This year’s Carol was the last to be organized by the Amosun-led government .
