Barely 48 hours after the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, visited parts of Guma Local Government Area of Benue State to assess the security situation in the suspected herdsmen ravaged communities, attackers struck in Iye village in the local government area.

Eyewitnesses said assailants stormed the village on Friday night and started shooting sporadically.

“They came shooting sporadically in the evening of Friday. From where we were in Gbajimba town (LGA headquarters), you could hear the sound of gunshots coming from Iye village which they attacked”, the eyewitness said.

“There was panic everywhere. People started running helter-skelter for fear of the unknown and given the close proximity of Iye to Gbajimba.

“But in no time, soldiers went after them and, after minutes of exchange of gunfire, they were repelled by the superior fire power of the soldiers who also chased them.”

Guma Local Government Area Chairman, Mr. Anthony Shawon, who confirmed the attack, added that the invaders were repelled by the army.
