Bama Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp football team, on Tuesday thrashed the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) team 2-1 in a friendly football match in Maiduguri.

The IDPs surprised the NSCDC players with good resilience from the first blast of the referee’s whistle in the match played at NYSC camp.

Both teams showed the urge to outplay one another, with the IDPs piling much of the pressure on the visitors in the early minutes of the first half.

The first goal was scored by Goni Tela of IDPs team 10 minutes into the match with Hashimu Muhammad of NSCDC grabbing the equaliser in the 30th minute, while Ali Goni sealed victory for the IDPs in the 65th minute.

Ibrahim Abdullahi, the NSCDC Commandant, said the match was organised as part of activities to commemorate World Civil Defence Day slated for March 1.

Abdullah said it was also to strengthen existing synergy, partnership and collaboration between the corps and host communities.

He said that the event would bring the attention of the public to the vital importance of civil protection and enhancing public trust in the corps.

“You can see the thunderous applause and the happiness on the faces of the IDPs, no one will believe we have such skilful football players among the IDPs,” he said.

According to him, the march would enhance community participation in crime prevention, by helping to identify and solving crime related problems in the society.

“We are using this week to encourage citizens in the state to show love, embrace one another and promote sustainable peaceful coexistence and shun violence,” said Abdullahi.(NAN)
