THE Senator representing Oyo North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, who is contesting on the platform of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), on Saturday, declared that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) needs to sit up and focus on its responsibility so that they would not constantly subject Nigerians to unwarranted discomfort.

Senator Buhari, who spoke at Ibapon area of Ogbomoso, said it is disheartening that INEC, which had four full years to plan for any activity, continues to subject the people to unnecessary stress through election postponement every four years.

“This is a sad development, not for the candidates alone, but for every Nigerian. Nobody will be happy with this type of situation. This is the third time it’s happening to me. It happened in 2011. Then, we were already voting and around 2:00 pm, the election was called off. The same postponement occurred in 2015, and now in 2019. It is becoming a norm, but for us, we are going back to work and to prepare for next week.

“This kind of postponement affects the people’s enthusiasm towards voting. We have to start working on getting them interested again because the apathy that has developed from this is obvious.  I think it’s time INEC lived up to its responsibilities. INEC needs to be more up and doing in the performance of its duty so that people will not lose interest in the democratic process,” Senator Buhari stated.
