The Federal Executive Council at its meeting on Wednesday, approved a fresh bill for the amendment of Electoral Act and another bill seeking the establishment of a proposed Electoral Offences Commission.
This was despite an ongoing controversy between the presidency and the National Assembly over President Muhamadu Buhari’s decision to withhold assent to the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill (2018) which was proposed by the federal legislature.
The FEC also set up a ministerial committee to investigate the tremors experienced in some parts of Abuja last week.
These came even as the FEC at its meeting presided by President Buhari also lamented dwindling revenues from oil and agricultural sectors.
The Council’s meeting was the first after the one presided by Vice-President YemiOsinbajo lastt week while Buhari was away in Benjing, China, for the Forum of China-Africa Cooperation.
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), who was one of the ministers who briefed State House correspondents on the outcome of the meeting, said the FEC approved three bills for transmission to and passage by the National Assembly.
According to Malami, the proposed approved bills approved by the Councils are the Constitution Alteration BIll (2018); Electoral Act (Amendment) BIll (2018); and the Electoral Offences Commission BIll (2018).
The AGF attributed the proposed bills to the efforts of the Electoral Reforms Committee led by a former President of the Senate, Ken Nnamani.
