Buoyed by the alarming number of casualties on Nigeria road accidents involving children who were not strapped, a not-for-profit organisaiton, Strap and Safe Child Foundation, has initiated a new move towards securing children’s safety on the road.

The move is poised to drive home the importance of children’s safety on the road and ensure compliance and enforcement of standards. To drive home this innovation, the foundation is organising and event tagged: ‘Strapped Child, Safe Nation, Secure Future’ on Friday, May 25 at NECA House, Ikeja.

Chief Executive Officer of the organisation, Mrs. Bolanle Edwards, who regretted the alarming rate of accidents among children, said the event was In commemoration of this year’s children’s day, and targeted at creating awareness by engaging pupils and the public on a social media challenge on Instagram with the picture/video clip with the most likes winning a prize.

According to her, people are encouraged to take a picture or a short video clip of a strapped child/children echoing “I STRAP” tag @strapandsafe on IG with the hashtag #StrappedChild #SafeNation #SecureFuture.

The CEO of Rely Supply, Mrs. Fayo Williams will be the guest speaker, while schools with child safety advocacies are invited to participate. The Board Director, Strap and Safe Child Foundation, Mr. Olawunmi Edwards, said the organisation is working towards the safety of children via its tripod vision focus: Road safety, home safety and school safety (R-H-S).

“Our mission is to bring to knowledge, safety standards in homes, in school, on the road, to ensure compliance and get government to enforce same. Since we believe strongly in ensuring that the safety of children should be seen as important for adults, we do this by creating awareness and agitation across various platforms.

Just recently, we agitated for enforcement of the child’s right to safe environment and transportation and adequate punishment should be given to those who don’t comply.”
