American professional basketball player, LeBron James, said Monday would be one of the greatest moments of his life, as his LeBron James Family Foundation and the Akron (Ohio) Public Schools launch a new elementary school for at-risk children in his hometown.

The ‘I Promise School’ is the culmination of nearly a decade of work by James’ foundation, with its focus on educating children from challenging situations or backgrounds.

LeBron recalls in a tweet that, as a kid, he once missed 83 days of school when he was in the fourth grade.

The school will begin with two grades, third and fourth, with plans to expand in the coming years.

The school is part of Akron Public Schools, not a charter or private school.

The school opened with 240 students — 120 third- and 120 fourth graders and will add grades until it’s 1-8 by 2022.

School year is from July 30 to May 17, plus a seven-week summer school for learning retention.

I Promise School also offers a resource centre for parents who want to finish school; and it includes mentoring and job-search assistance for parents.
