ABUJA- THE Executive Director, National Integrated Water Resources Management Commission, NIWRMC, Reuben Habu, yesterday, stated that collaboration with the academia in the water sector development remains important in national development.
Habu made the statement in Abuja during visit by the Department of Geography Department of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, IBBU, Lapai, Niger State, on an excursion exercise led by Head of Geography Department, IBBU, Dr Hadiza Liman, including senior lecturers and postgraduate students from the Department of Water Resources and Environmental Management.
He said: “We thank you for this auspicious visit and excursion to the commission. This is an integration that you appreciate what we do here as government agency to better the water sector through our mandate.
“Collaboration with academia will improve service delivery. It is an important step taking by your department and this will also bridge the gap between academia research and water resources management institutions.
“It is through collaboration and sharing of data that true productivity and efficiencies can be achieved.”
He also added that the commission will continue to foster synergy between academia and institutions in the water sector for efficiency and better productivity in service delivery and human capacity building.
In appreciating the warn reception during the excursion head of the team, Dr Liman said they have understood some operations of the commission, and would like to work with the organization on developing the water sector in various areas they will agree on.
Also speaking was a senior lecturer from the University, Dr Samuel Ibrahim, explained that t objective of the excursion was to acquaint the students with issues relating to planning, execution and processes in water resources sector of the country.
While giving vote of thanks on behalf of the commission, Engr Peter Sule, said partnering with other agency was key to achieve the expected results in the water sector in terms of water resources regulation and management.
Sule also harped on the necessity of the National Water Resources Bill awaiting passage into law by the National Assembly.
“And the speedy passage of the Water Resources Bill will address many challenges at same time generate revenue”, he said.
